The Boxes We Choose
The investor and de facto philosopher, Naval Ravikant said that "The more neatly you fit into society, the less free vou actually are."
It’s an interesting perspective.
The more neatly we fit into society, the more, by definition, we’re accepted. Which also means that we’re observing and adhering to society’s defined norms.
And the more we’re adhering to defined norms, the higher the odds that we’re not adhering to what we believe but rather what society believes.
Of course, it’s entirely possible that there is convergence between these two ideas, but it’s also entirely possible - I’d suggest, more than probable - that there isn’t.
That, at some level, we’re sacrificing of ourselves to be what’s expected of us. That we’re moving less towards who we are and more towards an idea of who we should be.
That’s worth thinking about as we close out the year. It’s worth considering what we’re about and what we want and where we’re headed.
It’s worth considering if the box really is for us.
