Inspiration can come from many different sources. Depending on our interests and affinities, we might look to sports personalities, musicians, business executives, politicians, artists or some other professional(s) in some other field(s) altogether.

We may even look to different people at different stages of our lives - whoever made an impact (and I define that broadly) at that specific point in time, for whatever specific reason.

Doctrines Versus Values

I think the problem begins when we subscribe solely to a specific point of view, a particular doctrine.

This is what I believe in. These are the truths about this or that and they cannot be compromised.

We’ve learnt (been taught/taught ourselves) these doctrines over the years and have chosen to accept them as the path forward - the only path forward. And, we’ve galvanized the ‘opposition’ into a defined doctrine of its own - the other, that against which we must fight, come hell or high water.

Culture As Operating System

Culture, in all its forms, plays such a strong role in our lives that, for the most part, we don’t really even pay attention to it or realize it.

It’s formed through years of experience, understanding and shared experiences. This is the case at home, in our communities, with our friends and with our colleagues at work.

In fact, Trevor Noah once referred to culture as “an operating system that you have, that you didn’t even realize you had”. That captures it perfectly for me.

When We've Messed Up

‘Messing up’ is par for the course.

Any time you take on an initiative or a project or a venture, there’s a strong chance that you’re going to mess up along the way.

The more visible the initiative (in whatever sphere of life you’re operating within), the more public that mess up will be - and the more prominent the impact on some stakeholder or constituent. In other words, someone’s going to get hurt, in some form or fashion.

It's Always In The "Doing"

I think we get so caught up in the goals that we’re after that we lose sight of the need to focus on the process. Especially when the goals are big, audacious.

This makes sense, intuitively, of course. The bigger the goals, the higher the stakes, the more invested we are in their achievement. It’s natural then that we takes these goals seriously, and that they occupy our thought processes.

In today's episode, I speak to the importance of being an optimist, to fight cynicism. Many view unbridled optimism as a weakness, because it requires a health measure of vulnerability. To the contrary, I believe it's a superpower.

Authenticity Matters

Authenticity has become a rare commodity.

I mean, at first blush, you’d think it would be abundant in society, personal or professional. Because when what you see is what you get, there are no illusions, no need for personal estimations or second guesses. What you saw would, in fact, be what you got.

But in a world driven by social media, the lure of the instant, ADD-fueled soundbite, and the much-discussed finality (and hence, importance) of the ‘first impression’, most of us are on our toes.

Cultures Don't Get Created Overnight

Culture isn’t created overnight. You can’t mandate it.

You also can’t leave it be and assume a positive productive culture will create itself.

Culture needs to be defined and cultivated, which means a few things:

It has to be intentional. It requires a clear definition i.e. we need to be clear as to what we want it to be.

It has to be actively pursued - we need to have a plan to cultivate it.

War Stories: Golf Lessons From Melbourne

I started playing golf back in 1996, while I was on a long term consulting assignment in Melbourne, Australia. I needed something to do on the weekends by myself, so I took a few lessons (not enough) and then started to play a local course a couple of times a month.

I remember one Saturday, I went out to the course with my friend and (former) colleague, Ben, and, as is normal, we were asked to pair up with another couple of golfers, who we didn’t know, so that we’d form a group of four.

(Don't) Stay In Your Lane

A platform is a byproduct of success.

What I mean by that is that success in any given field results in not only the usual rewards (economic gain, career progression, industry recognition, etc.), it also provides us with a voice. We’re sought out by our community and those interested in, and impacted by, our work. They want to hear from us, and are ready to give us the opportunity to speak, to be heard.

The Thing About Getting Older...

I don’t mean to oversimplify (though I’m about to), but it seems to me that the biggest thing about getting older is that you begin to run out of excuses.

What I mean by that is that, as the years go on, as our experiences educate us, and as we start to realize what we value, we realize that the only reason we aren’t where we want to be, is because of us. Of the choices we’ve made.
